UpdateProgress subcontrols modification

I have the following code in place on my page. What I would like to do is to dynamically set the
lblProcessingRequest Text property during page load, because the site have some local language
customization build in.

I have tried a lot of things, but can't manage to get it to work.

<asp:UpdateProgressID="UpdateProgress"runat="server"AssociatedUpdatePanelID="UpdatePanel"DisplayAfter="100"DynamicLayout="False">

<ProgressTemplate><imgsrc="images/ProcessAnimation.gif"align="absMiddle"> <asp:labelID="lblProcessingRequest"Text="Processing request..."runat="server"Font-Bold="True"></asp:label></ProgressTemplate></asp:UpdateProgress>

The content is a template, so you can't immediately get at the controls like you normally can.

The template is instantiated during PreRender, so you should be able to hook into the Page's PreRenderComplete event, then do a FindControl on the update progress to get to the label:

private void PreRenderCompleteHandler(object sender, EventArgs args) {
Label l = (Label) UpdateProgress.FindControl("lblProcessingRequest");
l.Text = ""; // some localized text
}

Whenever you do this sort of thing, please, please be wary of ViewState. You should disable ViewState on that label, or you will be persisting viewstate data that doesn't need to be. If you are doing this for many labels on the page it could really add up to a problem. Read my (lengthy) article on ViewState, linked in my signature, if you have time.

ProtectedSub Page_PreRender(ByVal senderAsObject,ByVal eAs System.EventArgs)HandlesMe.PreRenderTryCType(UpdateProgress.FindControl("lblProcessingRequest"), Label).Text ="Some local Text"
Catch exAs Exception
EndTryEndSub

Sorry to say that this doesn't work. The control is not found. Couldn't this be because the label only is visible during the UpdateProgress, and at all
other time is hidden? I even tried hooking the control in the UpdateProgress PreRender method, but that didn't work eighter...

Ok, was I litte to hasty here.

Protected

Sub Page_PreRenderComplete(ByVal senderAsObject,ByVal eAs System.EventArgs)HandlesMe.PreRenderComplete

Hooking into the PreRenderComplete works fine!

UpdateProgress Renders Differently in IE7

I am using an update progress control which contains an animated gif and then some text below. The style on the DIV creates a box around it. It renders fine in IE6 but IE7 the Please Wait...shows up outside the box...any suggestions? Here is the code and css style:

<asp:UpdateProgress ID="UpdateProgress1" runat="server">
<ProgressTemplate>
<Div class="wdeProgressIndicator">
<img src="http://pics.10026.com/?src=images/progressbar.gif" alt="Please Wait..." />
Please Wait...
</Div>
</ProgressTemplate>
</asp:UpdateProgress>

background-color: #ffffff;
margin: auto;
height: 10px;
width: 300px;
position: absolute;
left: 50%;
top: 40%;
margin-left: -150px;
margin-top: -5px;
border-right: #5d7b9d thin solid;
border-top: #5d7b9d thin solid;
border-left: #5d7b9d thin solid;
border-bottom: #5d7b9d thin solid;
padding-right: 5px;
padding-left: 5px;
padding-bottom: 5px;
padding-top: 10px;

If i do the following it works fine, so there has to be more html in the page, that is manipulating something. In any case, why not make the image a background-image on the div with the css, and rmeove the image tag all together, so the image is just part of the div anyway.

<html>
<style>
.wdeProgressIndicator{
background-color: #ffffff;
margin: auto;
height: 10px;
width: 300px;
position: absolute;
left: 50%;
top: 40%;
margin-left: -150px;
margin-top: -5px;
border-right: #5d7b9d thin solid;
border-top: #5d7b9d thin solid;
border-left: #5d7b9d thin solid;
border-bottom: #5d7b9d thin solid;
padding-right: 5px;
padding-left: 5px;
padding-bottom: 5px;
padding-top: 10px;
}
</style>

<body>
<Div class="wdeProgressIndicator">
<img src="http://pics.10026.com/?src=images/progressbar.gif" alt="Please Wait..." />
Please Wait...
</Div>
</body>
</html>

Good suggestion..thanks. That seems to work for now.

Updating a DataList with UpdatePanel

I've been trying to update my DataList with UpdatePanel but it's not working.

What I have is a text field for a user to enter comments and a save button, along with a DataList control all in an UpdatePanel.

Data is being saved on the table when the save button is clicked but the DataList is not updated unless I refresh the browser. What am I doing wrong?

Here is my ASP code:

 <asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel3" runat="server"> <ContentTemplate> <asp:Panel ID="PanelCommentBody" runat="server" CssClass="collapsePanel" Width="451px"><br /> <asp:TextBox ID="txtComments" runat="server" Height="45px" TextMode="MultiLine" Width="412px" ValidationGroup="cmnts" ></asp:TextBox><br /> <asp:Label ID="lblComment" runat="server" Text="" Font-Size="Small"></asp:Label> <asp:RequiredFieldValidator ID="RFVComments" runat="server" ErrorMessage="Please enter comment." ValidationGroup="cmnts" ControlToValidate="txtComments" Font-Size="Small" Width="154px"></asp:RequiredFieldValidator> <asp:Button ID="bttnPostComment" runat="server" Text="Post Comment" OnClick="bttnPostComment_Click" ValidationGroup="cmnts" Width="122px" /> <asp:Button ID="bttnDiscard" runat="server" Text="Discard" OnClick="bttnDiscard_Click" CausesValidation="false" /> </asp:Panel> <cc1:CollapsiblePanelExtender ID="CollapsiblePanelExtender2" runat="server" CollapseControlID="closeComment" ExpandControlID="closeComment" TargetControlID="PanelCommentBody" Collapsed="true" SuppressPostBack="true"> </cc1:CollapsiblePanelExtender> <asp:DataList ID="DataList1" runat="server" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" Width="307px" Font-Size="Small"> <ItemTemplate> <strong>From: <a href="../Default.aspx?urnm=<%# Eval("UserName")%>"><asp:Label ID="FromLabel" runat="server" Font-Size="Small" Text='<%# Eval("UserName")%>'></asp:Label></a></strong> | Date Posted: <asp:Label ID="DateAddedLabel" runat="server" Text='<%# Eval("DateAdded", "{0:MMM dd, yy}")%>'></asp:Label><br /> <asp:Label ID="CommentLabel" runat="server" Text='<%# Eval("Comment")%>'></asp:Label><br /> <br /> </ItemTemplate> </asp:DataList><asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:MyDB%>" SelectCommand="SELECT [UserName], [Comment], [DateAdded] FROM [Comments] WHERE ([CL_Id] = @dotnet.itags.org.CL_Id) ORDER BY [DateAdded] DESC"> <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter DefaultValue="1" Name="CL_Id" Type="String" /> </SelectParameters> </asp:SqlDataSource> </ContentTemplate> </asp:UpdatePanel>

Here is my Code Behind for the save button:

protected void bttnPostComment_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string flname = Request.QueryString["filename"];
flname = flname.Substring(0, flname.Length - 4);

if (User.Identity.IsAuthenticated)
{
MembershipUser myObject = Membership.GetUser();
string usrid = myObject.ProviderUserKey.ToString();
string usrname = User.Identity.Name;
string cmmnt1 = txtComments.Text;
string connStr = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["MyDB"].ConnectionString;
SqlConnection cnn = new SqlConnection(connStr);
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("INSERT INTO Comments (CL_Id, UserId, UserName, Comment) VALUES ('" + flname + "', '" + usrid + "', '" + usrname + "', '" + cmmnt1 +"')", cnn);
cnn.Open();
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
cnn.Close();
}
else
{
lblComment.Text = "You need to login to make comments";
}
}

----------

Thanks in advance,

Louis

1. Make UpdatePanel UpdateMode="Conditional"

2. after cnn.close(); write UpdatePanel3.Update()

Thanks siva sakki, I tried your suggestion but it still doesn't work.

What else can I try?

Louis

Updating a DataList with UpdatePanel

On Page_Load event, register DataList control

protected void Page_Load()
{
ScriptManager1.RegisterAsyncPostBackControl(DataList1);

DataList1.DataSource = this.SqlDataSource1;
DataList1.DataBind();
}

Thanks chetan, your suggestion might work. My problem is that I have the ScriptManger1 in the master page.

How can I reference this the way you have specified above?

Thank you,

Louis

I have tried the following to reference the the ScriptManger from content panel code behind:

ScriptManager.GetCurrent(this.Page).RegisterAsyncPostBackControl(DataList1);

is this the correct way of doing it? If it is my UpdatePanel still not updating. I have also removed this two lines:

//DataList1.DataSource = this.SqlDataSource1;
//DataList1.DataBind();

It is giving me this error:

Both DataSource and DataSourceID are defined on 'DataList1'. Remove one definition.

Do I need this two lines for it to work?

I am pulling my hair on this one.

Please help. Thanks again.

Louis

If you go back to the original code you submitted and add DataList1.DataBind() at the end of the button routine, you would probably achieve the results you want.

There is nothing to cause the DataList to rebind after the button event.

If you simply delete the UpdatePanel from the page, your code would not work either. As a rule, if doesn't work without Ajax, it won't work with it. The DataBinding event for the DataList has to run on the postback.

wrayx1 that did the trick.

Thank you soooo much!!!

Louis

Just do withDataList1.DataBind();

Let me know if this helps you

Okay, I have a similar question about updating using DataList. Will someone give me a hand on this. Here's what I have.

The problem I have is that it's not updating. At the moment, I disabled the AJAX UpdatePanel to figure out the udpate first. All I wanted is to update the Approval checkbox to the sqlDataSource control. Noticed I used Bind instead of Eval for the checkbox control that way I was hoping that once I called the sqlApproval.Update() method, the approval checkbox will automatically update the database field. However, that is not so. Any help is appreciated.

Updating a Text Box after the modalpopup closes.

Hi There

I'm attempting to create a function for users that allows them to browse their intranet site and save links within the intranet as a collection of 'my links'. To do this I'm using an iFrame embedded within the modalpopup extension. Everything is working with the exception of the final part (which is quite frustrating) - Basically I need to populate a textbox with the current location in the iFrame. I know that I'm ready the value correctly but the text box is just not updating. I've inserted the user control below - all you need to do is insert the control into a new page and then point the iframe at a starting page. Any help greatly appreciated as I could do with an answer to this issue as soon as possible.

Updating multiple controls

I have an asp.net web site. I have many text boxes, drop downs and check boxes that need to be populated based on user input. I have a main text box for them to put in an ID number and a button to run my code. The problem is that the text boxes and check boxes are all over the form so I can't group them in one update panel.

Also, some of the check boxes, drop downs and text boxes can change the data in other controls based on user input. This causes so many post backs under normal conditions. If I put everything in an update panel, isn't that still going to cause just as many post backs?

Putting the whole page in one UpdatePanel will cause pretty much the same amount of data to be sent back to the server (the whole viewstate is always sent) and by the sounds of it pretty much the same amount of data comin back. It would reduce network traffic a bit and get rid of the screen flicker though.

You really need to put just the bits that update in multiple UpdatePanels, they will all get updated when one does. However, I'd go one step further and set all of them to UpdateMode="Conditional" so you can only update the panels you need to when you need to.

Thank you. I looked into that a bit further and also watched a video on multiple update panels. I will try this, conditional updates and add triggers to the update panels. Thanks again.

Updating text on page at regular intervals

Okay, I am pretty new to the Atlas/AJAX system, so im just now learning some of these tricks and whatnot. I have a page that basically needs to load a quote every 30 seconds or something. Right now, I have the page setup so that the text can be changed by clicking a javascript button without refreshing the page, but I am trying to get that function to call based on the Timer control included with atlas. any ideas for refreshing text at a regular time interval would be greatly appreciatedthe timer control would be what you want, but there's no way to tell what could be wrong without you showing some code you are trying

Hi,

this is an ideal scenario for theUpdatePanel control. The page can be refreshed at regular intervals by aTimer control. Check the following example:

<%@. Page Language="C#" %><!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"><script runat="server"> protected void TheTimer_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e) { lblUpdate.Text = DateTime.Now.ToString(); }</script><html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" ><head runat="server"> <title>Untitled Page</title></head><body> <form id="form1" runat="server"> <asp:ScriptManager ID="TheScriptManager" runat="server"></asp:ScriptManager><%-- Timer --%> <asp:Timer ID="TheTimer" runat="server" Interval="2000" OnTick="TheTimer_Tick"></asp:Timer><%-- UpdatePanel --%> <asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel1" runat="server"> <Triggers> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="TheTimer" EventName="Tick" /> </Triggers> <ContentTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lblUpdate" runat="server"></asp:Label> </ContentTemplate> </asp:UpdatePanel> </form></body></html>

Use Ajax on the label

Hi all

on the label i am using the code

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
this.lTime.Text = Convert.ToString(DateTime.Now.TimeOfDay);
}

this is showing fised time

but i want to change the time acording to the second how this is possible?

Thanks

Hi there,

Have a look at this article

http://ajax.asp.net/docs/tutorials/IntroToTimerControl.aspx

Hope it helps ;)

You can change the label content on Javascript

1. Get the label client ID (If you're not using master page and the label is not inside an inner control it should be the
same as the ID you gve to the label)

2. Get the label by document.getElementById or $get

3. Change it's textContent property (Mozilla) or innerHTML / innerText (IE) property of the object and than the label content will change

I am getting some problem here!

I read the post 2

and make a user control name header and done all the coding on that page

after I make a master page i first cell i add a script manager then i put update panel there I drag that user control in the update panel ! That i make for the timer so it showing me the following error

Error Rendering control -UpdatePanel1

An Unhandled Exception has occured.
The control with ID 'Timer1' requires s script Manager on this page.The Script Manager must appear before any controls that need it!

Hi There,

Simple Example: NOTE SCRIPT MANAGER HAS TO BE FIRST

ASPX

<asp:ScriptManagerID="ScriptManager1"runat="server"></asp:ScriptManager>

<asp:UpdatePanelID="UpdatePanel3"runat="server">

<ContentTemplate>

<asp:TimerID="Timer1"runat="server"Interval="1000"OnTick="Timer1_Tick">

</asp:Timer>

<asp:LabelID="Label2"runat="server"Text="Label"></asp:Label>

</ContentTemplate>

</asp:UpdatePanel>

ASPX.VB

protectedvoid Timer1_Tick(object sender,EventArgs e)

{

Label2.Text =DateTime.Now.ToString();

}

IF above not working, Could you post your code here so that me or others can guide you through this.

Are you using the AJAX enabled website

I am not using that

is it necessary to use the AJAX enabled website for using the AJAX?

hi

just go through the following link

http://ajax.asp.net/docs/overview/UsingTimerControlTutorial.aspx#CodeExamples

shakti5385:

is it necessary to use the AJAX enabled website for using the AJAX?

It's not necessary, the key difference is in the web.config.

You may modify any existing web site's config file to make it work with AJAX.

Here is the documentation regarding it. http://ajax.asp.net/docs/ConfiguringASPNETAJAX.aspx
